Lady's Mittens on 2 needles

Here is the pattern for Lady's Mitts on 2 needles.
It is such an old pattern, I'm not sure who gave it to me.

Lady's Mittens On 2 needles
You'll need
A pair of 4mm needles 4 oz knitting worsted yarn.
Right Mitt : **cast on 40 sts and work 3" in k1 p1 ribbing
work 8 rows in stocking stitch. Ending with a purl row **
To make thumb gusset
1st row: k 21sts Inc 1 st in each of the next two sts k to end of row.
2nd and alternate rows :purl
3rd row:k 21 inc in next st k 2 inc in next st . knit to end of row.
5th row: k 21 inc in next st k 4 inc in next st knit to end of row.
6th row : purl.
Continue increasing in this manner, that is having 2 sts more between increases on next and every alternate rows to 52 sts on needles.
Next row : purl
To make thumb:
k 35 sts turn cast on 1 st p 14 including cast on st.turn cast on 1 st.
working on these15 sts cont. even in stocking stitch for 2 1/4 " or desired lenght ending with a purl row.
Next row: k1 *k 2 tog to end of row.
Break yarn thread end through remaining sts. draw up and fasten securely.
sew thumb seam.
To make remainder of mitt:
with right side facing join yarn to last st on right hand needle pick up and knit 2 sts at the base of the thumb knit across sts on left hand needle.
Next row purl ,purl together the 2 sts picked up at the base of the thumb,40 sts now on needle.
continue even in stocking stitch until work measures 5 1/2" from the top of ribbing ending with a purl row.
To shape top:
1 st row: k1 sl1 k1 psso k 14 k 2tog k 2 sl1 k1 psso k to last 3 sts k2tog k1.
2nd and alternate rows: purl.
3rd row k1 sl1 k1 psso k 12 k 2tog k 2 sl1 k1 psso k to last 3 sts k2tog k1.
5th row:k1 sl1 k1 psso k 10 k 2tog k 2 sl1 k1 psso k to last 3 sts k2tog k1.
Continue decreasing in this manner until16 sts on needle.
cast off purlways sew top and side seams.

Left mitt
work from** to ** giving for right mitt.
To make thumb gusset
1st row k 16 inc in next two sts k to end of row
2nd and alternate rows: purl
3rd row k 16 inc in next st k 2 inc in next st knit to end of row
5th row :k 16 inc in next st k 4 inc in next st knit to end of row
Continue increasing in this manner, that is having 2 sts more between increases on next and every alternate rows to 52 sts on needles.
next row purl
To make thumb
k30 turn cast on 1 st p 14 including cast on st. turn cast on 1 st working on these 15 sts.
complete thumb and remainder of the mitt as given for right mitt.

This is very close to the old Patons pattern I always use for 2 needle mitts. A real breeze.
I like you Newfoundland mitts. Can you give a source for that pattern or a description of the stitch? Your earflap hat is nice too, and it looks heavier than the one I just made, good for later on. I think I have that magazine somewhere - must look and see.
